for everyone
Intramuros being what it is, you would think incidental shots taken there would mostly consist of stone and buildings. Nope. Honestly, that's what I originally had in mind.

But nothing quite grabbed my interest as much as the people who were walking around. Considering all these shots were taken on the rush, I'm rather pleased with how they turned out. Not the best shots I could have taken, but I hope the viewer sees they're not too bad for an amateur who had no time to compose the shots.

So... I'm much obliged to the people who gave me permission to shoot these shots.

Well, not all the shots. Shot 01 is of two kids who thought I was shooting the archway at Calle Real. Unfortunately, I couldn't get my camera out of its bag fast enough to get more shots of them.

The second group of shots are of a quartet of high school (?) students hanging out at Plaza Roma, which is right in front of the Manila Cathedral. The lights to the statue of King Carlos IV of Spain were rather bright and gave out a wonderful yellow glow that very easy to get great shots.

I also took a lot of shots of guards that night, but I mostly tried not to ask them to pose. The result? Lots of camera shake. So only two shots survived for publication.

Finally, my biggest goof of the day. :-S One would think white cotton uniforms would be easy to contrast with grey-brown stone? Nope. Not when you don't quite have a good grasp of lighting. Besides, the timing sucked. The sun had already gone down and we were losing light fast. Still, I had wonderful subjects to shoot and that made up for my ineptness somewhat. I'm not certain if the school is PLM, but the two students who showed up in the most pictures here introduced themselves as Lariz and Belle.

Sigh. I've got a lot to learn about adjusting to limited light.

But I hope y'all will forgive me and enjoy these shots anyway.

Eh? Actually, the only reason I had the guts to ask permission to get these shots is because Babae yung kasama ko! :-D Haha. If you have an ulterior motive in photographing a member of the opposite sex, it will show in the work. hehe.

I'm still sad about these particular shots because they could have come out much better if I'd just had a bit more time and a bit more sunlight. :-S Or if I just had a reflector (read: ordinary illustration board) with me. :-S

But I'm glad you like it. I'm afraid though that the great bulk of the credit really goes to the subject rather than the photographer. hehe.

Er... Francis, on the other hand, I'm sure magandang way to get around with BOYS ung pagging photographer. hehe. The dynamics are different.

Just a historical note explaining why I love this subject: At the end of the battle of Manila, Jones Bridge and the Post Office were two of only very few structures left standing.

If Manila is dour and lacking in imagination and history nowadays, that's because its history, chiseled into the architecture of its buildings, was for the most part burned to the ground. Along with a hundred thousand filipino lives snuffed out.

Just pointing it out because we are SO beginning to forget... both the horror of the loss, and the glory that was Manila before the war.

Jones Bridge and the Post office, nondescript as they may seem now, along with intramuros which itself has been rebuilt, are some of our very few reminders.

I like the idea of the photo.
But the composition could have been better so as to emphasize it more.
But then again, what do i know. I'm not a professional photographer either :)
I miss the devcom photography class tuloy...

Oh. Thing is, I just shot this as a geometric shot. I was too far from the post office to have a decent close up using my lens, and I zoomed out to see what else I could shoot. At first I just liked the lines. I then started looking for something closer by to shoot. The first shots in this series were taken at 4:00 PM, and this was shot a few minutes after sundown, so medyo harassed ako to find light. I didn't think this was going to turn out as well as it did. :D

But yeah, I agree. If I'd spent a little bit more time on this there would probably be more possibilities. Many more.

:-S

I need to go back there sometime.
