Other Stories

Why "Other Stories"?

The theme of "other stories" has followed me around since my gradeschool days. (Hence "alternativity" which has been my email avatar since college.)

The basic idea is that there are certain stories that have not really found their way into the our society's conversation.

These stories (or approaches to stories) rarely find their way into the headlines, dont get discussed in polite conversation, and are only breezed through in university lectures.

They are, among others,

- the story of a sixth-grade pupil whose intellectual exploration the teacher dismisses as hubris.

- the story of an educator who finds he has more questions than answers.

- the story of a development advocate who isn't quite convinced he's advocating the right approach to development.

- the story of a storyteller in a land where stories are considered distractions from the necessary tasks of daily drudgery.

If the list seem's self centered, I'm afraid that's because a writer is limited by his formative experiences.

On the other hand, that's the point, isn't it?

The entire philosophy of focusing on "Other Stories" is summed up in the act of saying "Hey, look! My story is important too!"

Not because I have unusually important stories to tell, but because we all do.

In the end, the philosophy of "Other Stories" is about empowerment.

My story is important. Your story is important. These other stories that routinely get ignored? They matter.

They say the pen has a power that is far greater than the sword.

Here's to spreading that power a bit.

Here's to...

... the other stories.

Switchfoot, soundchecking the Prince Caspian OST Song "This is Home"

Okay folks, here's an absolute must-hear!

This is the first time we're going to hear something from the new Prince Caspian OST, and my, my! It's SWITCHFOOT doing the song! :-D

According to NarniaWeb (thanks for the heads up),

"'This is Home' which will appear on the Prince Caspian soundtrack and probably in the end movie credits as well. You can hear the first half of the song or so here."

On dreams and scribbles: Pumpkins, apparently being slow, have no desire to be found

Oh, the things we write in that place between sleep and awakening!

I fell asleep without turning off the computer, woke up sometime in the night with a story concept, and before shutting down the computer, typed this onto a notepad file:

We whom the world think lost...
have no desire to be found.

I suspect this has something to do with Anino, but I am not actually certain. I'm sure it was a sane thought because I had the presence of mind to open notepad.

The reason I suspect this had something to do with Anino is that I had just watched three straight DVDs of Batman The Animated Series (Volume 2 to be exact). And Batman and Neil Gaiman always sent my brain into the world of Anino.

So, yeah, the thought makes some sense after all. Hehehe.

Those of you I've told my "pumpkin" story to know that the same cannot be said about about my "pumpkin" dream.

For the benefit of those who do not know that story:

I once fell asleep thinking about the nature of poverty and the solutions this...

On Graduating to the "Real" world

For comments from the rest of you, here's somethng I posted on a new graduate's blog.I just thought it would be nice to keep a record of it here, and for everybody to be able to add their comments, whether agreeing or disagreeing.

My reply:

If it helps, you might want to remember that the whole "real world" thingy is a lie. The time you spent learning in school and the time you spent learning at work are equally valid, with the difference being in texture, not in validity.

So I've got a two-pronged suggestion.
Don't stop learning just because you're no longer in College.
and
Don't ever let people believe that the person you were in College was less valid than the person who will be working.

In the end, WHERE you are doesn't matter. Even who you THINK you are doesn't matter.

It's about who God says you are. And that discovery is what life is all about. Stay true to the act of trying to find yourself in God, and life will always be real.

Melba Padilla Maggay on Christianity and Culture

Hehe.

This is partly an offshoot from the discussion on Penny's blog. Since I don't want to introduce an only peripherally related topic there (the post was about "evangelists" who preach on public commuter vehicles), I thought I'd bring it up here.

I think it's important for Christians (regardless of denomination) to take up a conversation about what the nature of the gospel of Jesus Christ - what I have heard some leaders call the "core" gospel.

That, as opposed to a gospel in which cultural additions are embedded - the kind that says that when an Igorot becomes a Christian and trades animism for Christianity, he must also trade his bahag for a pair of trousers.

Thoughts, folks?

Hm. Enjoy the quote. :-D This Maggay booklet (it's really short) is one of my all time favorite essays (?), by the way.

-- ...

Birthdays for 26 March: Robert Frost 1874; Joseph Campbell, 1904; Tennesee Williams, 1914

What a coincidence... I was just talking about Campbell a while ago.

The following writers were all born on the 26th of March
poet Robert Frost (1874),
playwright Tennesee Williams (1914),
mythologist Joseph Campbell (1904).

I've already cited Frost once this year, so perhaps (while he and I don't often agree on many things, theology in particular) I should quote Joseph Campbell today:

The achievement of the hero is one that he is ready for and it's really a manifestation of his character. It's amusing the way in which the landscape and conditions of the environment match the readiness of the hero. The adventure that he is ready for is the one that he gets ... The adventure evoked a quality of his character that he didn't know he possessed.

-- from Episode 1, Chapter 12 of The Power of Myth (2001) PBS television series, Mystic Fire Video (2001)

Help please! (Jungian archetypes)

Hi everyone,

I had thought to ask for help from only two or three people who have specific specializations in Psych. (Yes, that translates into "I was thinking of asking for professional help...")

But then I realized how many educators, writers, and voracious readers there are on my list, and realized asking everybody these questions might bring about some interesting results.

Anyway, I'm asking primarily because I discovered I worked my way into a slight writing conundrum. My Hero and my POV character (storyteller) are exact opposites. If they weren't both human beings they'd be exact opposites of each other.

Now plot-wise, I know what's going to happen. But I'm not completely sold on their banter. And also, I've got one character constantly describing the other character. I'm not sure what his point of view would be.

And also... except of course that they're on the same "side", how on earth do I create any kind of bond between them when they have nothing in common to bond over...

At the Very Heart of Good News

I was trying to write something to mark Easter, but I came along this translation and I knew I could not write anything that came any closer to what I wanted to express. So I'm just posting it. In this passage, St. Paul is responding to believers in Corinth who were wondering if the resurrection of the dead was something they could believe in. He responded by explaining that resurrection is at the very core of the Christian message.

1 Corinthians 15:12-18 (The Message)

(Boldface mine)

12-15 Now, let me ask you something profound yet troubling. If you became believers because you trusted the proclamation that Christ is alive, risen from the dead, how can you let people say that there is no such thing as a resurrection? If there's no resurrection, there's no living Christ. And face it—if there's no resurrection for Christ, everything we've told you is smoke and mirrors, and everything you've staked your life on is smoke and mirrors. Not only that, but we wou...

Miles To Go Before I Sleep... A Little Robert Frost Tonight

On this day in 1923, the Robert Frost poem, "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening," was published in The New Republic. It was Frost's favorite of his own poems, and he called it "my best bid for remembrance."

Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Source: The Writer's Almanac with Garrison Keillor
